Firearm Safety Course

Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore is pleased to announce that the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office is offering another free Citizens Firearms Course. Our training staff developed these courses in response to the high volume of requests from the citizens regarding firearms classes for the public. Just click on the course that you are interested in attending and complete the registration process, or you can pick up an application at the Talladega county Sheriff’s office in Talladega or Sylacauga.

The primary focus of the pistol course is to teach attendees how to safely and effectively handle and fire a pistol. Students will learn firearms safety and become familiar with various types of handguns, rifles, and shotguns in an attempt to aid them in proper firearms identification and function. They will also learn about Alabama’s self-defense laws. Students will spend approximately three hours in the classroom and one hour on the range. Upon completion of the course students will receive a certificate of attendance. We will provide a handgun for those who do not have their own. To attend one of our courses you MUST have a valid pistol permit or meet the following requirements:

*Be at least 18 years of age

*Submit to a background check

*No criminal record

Note that, if you do not have a valid pistol permit, be sure to follow the Alabama State law, Code section 13A-11-73(b), on the transportation of your handgun.
